Cursive Q

q is the letter that quietly turns into a g, because the descender wants to curl instead of run straight. A cursive q is a short letter, and it hands over to the next letter low.

How to write a cursive q

  1. Start just below the midline, make the same bowl as a and close it on the baseline.
  2. Carry a straight stroke down past the baseline.
  3. Loop back up to the baseline and exit to the right.

A q sits in the short + descender zone. Capital Q is a large O with a short stroke cutting through the bottom right.

Joining q to the next letter

q finishes on the baseline out of the loop. qu, qa.

Where it usually goes wrong

The descender turns into a second bowl, so q reads as g. Keep it a straight line with a single narrow loop back up. Write q and g side by side until the pair stops switching places.

Words to practise after the letter

Once the single letter holds its shape, put it into short words where it appears once: quick, queen, quiet. Type any of them into the generator above and it will lay out eight ruled rows of tracing for you.
