Cursive B

b is the letter most reversals start from: the loop at the top is where the letter either stays a b or turns into something else. A cursive b is a tall letter, and it hands over to the next letter low.

How to write a cursive b

  1. Start on the baseline, sweep up to the top line in a single stroke.
  2. Retrace straight back down the same path to the baseline.
  3. Retrace to the midline, curve out to the right into a small bowl, close it, and exit low.

A b sits in the tall zone. Capital B is two bowls stacked against a straight stem, both closing on the baseline.

Joining b to the next letter

b exits at the bottom of the small bowl, so the next letter begins on the baseline rather than at the midline. be, bo.

Where it usually goes wrong

The loop gets fat at the top. The tall stroke should be a straight line with a narrow loop, not a balloon. Rushed, it reverses into a d: b climbs first and then hangs its bowl on the right, while d closes its bowl before the stem rises.

Words to practise after the letter

Once the single letter holds its shape, put it into short words where it appears once: book, table, rabbit. Type any of them into the generator above and it will lay out eight ruled rows of tracing for you.
